Why transmission

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) is ideally suited technology for connecting U.S. grid regions. It cost-effectively moves large quantities of power over long distances. It precisely controls power flows, and it pulls electricity from healthy grids to jumpstart failed grids with “blackstart” capability. Today, Invenergy has 11 gigawatts of new transmission capacity in development—representing roughly one-third of new U.S. HVDC transmission. 

Experts project that the U.S. will need up to a 60% increase in electrical transmission capacity by 2030 to better distribute high-quality, low-cost wind and solar power – often generated a great distance away – to the regions where power is needed.

Cardal Transmission
Invenergy and its subsidiary Tealov developed the Cardal Transmission project, which is helping enable Uruguay's transition to a clean energy future. The project consists of 55 kilometers of new 500 kV high-voltage transmission line, 20 kilometers of new 150 kV transmission line, a new 500 kV substation and accompanying infrastructure. The line connects to the Punta del Tigre substation and a 150 kV high-voltage line in Salto, Uruguay.
